Lecturer in the Mathematics of Cities at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis
Dr Hannah Fry is a lecturer in the Mathematics of Cities at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis at UCL. She works alongside a unique mix of physicists, mathematicians, computer scientists, architects and geographers to study the patterns in human behaviour - particularly in an urban setting. Her research applies to a wide range of social problems and questions, from shopping and transport to urban crime, riots and terrorism.
Alongside her academic position, Hannah is an experienced public speaker giving conference keynotes and taking the joy of maths into theatres and schools. Hannah’s mathematical expertise has led to the development of fascinating documentaries including ‘Britain’s Greatest Invention ’, ‘Horizon: How to Find Love Online’, ‘Horizon: 10 Things You Need to Know About the Future’, ‘City in the Sky’ (BBC2), ‘Trainspotting Live’, ‘The Joy of Data’, ‘Climate Change By Numbers’ and ‘Calculating Ada: The Countess of Computing’ (BBC4). For radio, Hannah presents ‘Music By Numbers’ (BBC R1), ‘The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry’ and ‘Computing Britain’ (BBC R4).
As an author, Hannah has written two books: ‘The Indisputable Existence of Santa Claus: The Mathematics of Christmas’ (Transworld, 2016) which followed ‘The Mathematics of Love: Patterns, Proofs, and the Search for the Ultimate Equation’ (Simon & Schuster/ Ted, Feb 2015) in which Hannah brings together mathematical equations to provide answers to such questions as: What’s the chance of us finding love? What's the chance that it will last? How does online dating work, exactly? When should you settle down? How can you avoid divorce? When is it right to compromise? Can game theory help us decide whether or not to call?
Oliver is a Data Scientist at Datatonic with a background in computational physics and high performance computing. He is a machine learning practitioner who recently started exploring the world of deep learning. Datatonic partners with Google Cloud Platform to build state of the art machine learning and data analytics solutions, providing customers with actionable business insight.
Margriet is a Data Scientist and Developer Advocate for IBM. She has an academic background in climate research where she explored large observational datasets of carbon uptake by forests and the output of global scale weather and climate models. Now she explores ways to simplify working with diverse data using cloud databases, data warehouses, Spark, and Python notebooks.
Areiel Wolanow is the managing director of Finserv Experts, an independent consultancy that provides delivery and advisory services for machine learning and DLT to enterprises around the globe. He is an experienced business leader with over 30 years of experience in delivering successful business transformations, and has led enterprises through the full transformation life cycle in over 40 countries worldwide. Areiel has addressed the G20 on AI and financial inclusion, and currently serves as an advisor to the UK government in both blockchain and AI.

Carla Echevarria is UX Design Lead of the Google Assistant team. Her role is to ensure a cohesive product strategy and help formulate a long-term vision for the Assistant. Her primary goal is to build responsible and ethical AI platforms that provide real value to people.
Previously, she was a Design Lead at Facebook, where she was one of the primary inventors of Safety Check, Facebook's crisis response system. She was also the VP of Design for MakerBot, the leading company in desktop 3D printing.

Dr Beth Singler explores the social, ethical, philosophical and religious implications of advances in Artificial Intelligence and robotics. As a part of the project she is producing a series of short documentaries: Pain in the Machine, Friend in the Machine and Good in the Machine are complete. Pain in the Machine won the 2017 AHRC Best Research Film of the Year Award.
Beth is also an Associate Research Fellow at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence, collaborating on a CFI/Royal Society project on ‘AI Narratives’ with Claire Craig, Stephen Cave, Sarah Dillon and Kanta Dihal. In 2017/18 she will be on the advisory board for the RSA/Google DeepMind Citizen Juries.
Beth has appeared on Radio4’s Today, Sunday and Start the Week programmes discussing AI, robots, and pain. In 2017 she spoke at the Hay Festival as one of the ‘Hay 30’, the 30 best speakers to watch. She was also one of the Evening Standard’s Progress 1000 – the list of the most influential people in various fields.
Beth is an experienced social and digital anthropologist, and her first academic book is a ground breaking in-depth ethnography of the ‘Indigo Children’ – a New Age re-conception of both children and adults using the language of science, evolution, and spirituality.
