Enabling the city of the future with IoT

Wednesday 25 July 2018

A futuristic city isn’t hard to imagine. We are all familiar with the lifestyle shown in sci-fi films, from flying cars to vertical farming. So how long until this fiction becomes a reality? It all comes down to innovations in technology such as, AI, IoT and cloud computing, which will ultimately make our lives more efficient and sustainable as city populations boom.

We are all dreaming of a city where the air is fresh, travel is stress free with no traffic, and finding a parking space is history. What’s good to know is that we could be seeing this sooner than we thought. In fact the smart city industry is projected to be a $400 billion market by 2020, with 600 cities around the globe expected to generate 60% of the world's GDP by 2025, according to McKinsey research.

IoT is the key to building smart cities

The millions of connected devices we use every day all serve a purpose now, but the data they generate can be used to further improve our lives and build cities of the future.

In order for the future to happen, every device that is part of a smart city must work with others to gather and analyse information across infrastructure. This is where IoT comes in, providing the perfect template of a body of communicating devices, that provide smart solutions to everyday problems.

With IoT, city authorities can intelligently manage their assets, increase efficiencies, revolutionise transport, and reduce costs with the end goal being to enhance overall quality of life for the population. Technology leaders must lead the way in smart city development, by developing and supporting innovative solutions that will revolutionise the services and infrastructure of cities all over the world.
